Smokeball Alternatives and Smokeball Competitors for Law Firm Intake and Booking
Small US firms start looking for a Smokeball alternative for a handful of reasons: a renewal quote that arrived higher than expected, a sales call just to learn the price, or the discovery that full intake sits on the top plan. This page sets out what Smokeball publishes, read from smokeball.com/pricing on 8 October 2026, where Smokeball is still the right buy, what each realistic competitor prints on its own pricing page, and when the problem losing you new clients is solved by a smaller product.

In short
Smokeball publishes no price for any of its four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+. Read from its pricing page on 8 October 2026, every plan carries a Get pricing button, and the FAQ says cost depends on user count, plan, contract term and add-ons. Intake is absent from Bill, a paid add-on on Boost and Grow, and included only on Prosper+, and the page lists no online booking for prospective clients. If the job you need done is screening and booking each new website inquiry before another firm answers, Consultations does that from $49 a month, flat per firm, priced on the page.
Smokeball is practice management for small US firms with deep practice area tooling: matter and client management, court forms and templates, document automation, Word and Outlook integration, billing, trust accounting and, on its top plan, automatic time capture. Family law, personal injury, real estate, estate planning and other form heavy practices buy it for those templates and calculators. Consultations does one job at the front door. It talks to the prospective client the moment they reach your website, asks your screening questions in plain conversation, checks the answers against the matters you take, collects the documents and party names a conflict search needs, and books the consultation on your calendar. It does not manage matters, bill or keep trust accounts, and its price is printed on the page and flat per firm.

Smokeball vs Consultations, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.

|---|---|---|
| Published price | $49, $129 or $299 a month flat per firm, on the pricing page | None. Four plans, each with a Get pricing button |
| How the bill grows | Flat per firm; adding staff inside a tier costs nothing | Per its FAQ, by number of users, plan, contract term and add-ons |
| Intake on the entry plan | Included on every plan | Not on Bill; a paid add-on on Boost and Grow; included on Prosper+ |
| Online booking for prospective clients | Included on every plan, inside the intake conversation | Not listed on the pricing page, which lists Office 365 calendar sync |
| Runs the intake conversation itself | Yes. An AI conversation screens every website inquiry at any hour | Lead and matter intake records; staff hold the conversation |
| Try before you buy | Run the intake conversation on this page now, then subscribe by card | Demo request and a personalized quote |
| Practice area templates and time capture | Not included. It hands off a brief and an export | Templates and calculators from Grow; automatic time capture on Prosper+ |

Why pros pick Consultations
One AI conversation that qualifies, intakes, books, and briefs
An AI conversation, not a form
Instead of a static form or a calendar link, our AI talks with each lead in plain language, qualifies them against your criteria, and asks for exactly what you need to know.
The whole front door in one place
Qualify, intake, collect documents, book the paid appointment, and produce a prepped brief, all in a single conversation, so you stop stitching tools together.
You walk in prepared
Every booked meeting comes with a clean brief of who is coming and why, so you only take the right consultations and you are ready before the call starts.
Why firms look for a Smokeball alternative
Few firms leave Smokeball because the templates are weak. Practice area templates, court forms and document automation are the reason most of them bought it, and for family law or estate planning work they save real hours on every matter. The reasons people start comparing usually sit somewhere else.
The first is price visibility. Smokeball removed the only figure it ever displayed, a From $149 a month line we read on 13 August 2026, and by 19 August every plan showed a Get pricing button instead. A managing partner who wants to budget a renewal, or compare it against a competitor, has to book a call to learn the number.
The second is where intake sits. On the published comparison matrix, intake is not available on Bill, is available on Boost and Grow only with the paid Intake add-on, and is included on Prosper+, which also adds lead management, inquiry intake and advanced matter intake. The third reason is the one that decides revenue. A prospective client who reaches your website at 9 at night and gets no answer signs with whichever firm responds first.
- No published price on any of the four plans
- A From $149 a month figure shown 13 August 2026 was removed by 19 August
- Intake absent from Bill, an add-on on Boost and Grow
- Lead management and inquiry intake listed on Prosper+ only
- No online booking for prospective clients listed on the pricing page
What Smokeball includes for intake on each plan
Bill covers invoicing, time and expense tracking, online payments, trust accounting and reporting, and accounting integrations. Boost adds fully browser based client and matter management, tasks and calendar, Microsoft 365 Outlook and Word integration, a client portal, eSignature and eFiling, and lists Intake and the Archie AI assistant as add-ons. Grow adds practice area templates and calculators, advanced document automation, automated forms, email management and the native desktop application, and Smokeball describes it as designed for firms with three or more staff.
Prosper+ is the top plan. It adds firm insights reporting, lead management, inquiry intake, advanced matter intake, custom workflows, staff activity and profitability reporting, and lists Intake, AutoTime and Workflows as included. None of the four plans, and none of the add-ons, carries a price on the page.
What the page does not describe is the software holding the first conversation. Intake inside Smokeball records leads and matters for your team. Answering a cold website visitor, asking screening questions in order, deciding whether the matter fits and putting a consultation on the calendar is still a person's job.
- Bill: billing, payments and trust accounting; no intake
- Boost: browser based matters and client portal; Intake as a paid add-on
- Grow: templates, document automation and desktop app; Intake as a paid add-on
- Prosper+: lead management, inquiry and matter intake, AutoTime and Workflows included
- Not described: the software screening and booking the lead itself
What intake costs on Smokeball compared with competitors that print a price
Because Smokeball prints nothing, the honest comparison is against the competitors that do. For a three person firm that wants intake forms inside the practice system, PracticePanther Business at $89 per user billed yearly is $267 a month, MyCase Pro at $100 per user is $300 a month, and CosmoLex Pro at $129 per user, the plan that adds online scheduling, is $387 a month. Rocket Matter Pro with its CRM add-on is $95 plus $39 per user, or $402 a month, plus a $399 onboarding fee.
Smokeball's own FAQ confirms its price depends on the number of users, so the same three person firm should expect a per user figure, and full intake requires either the add-on on Boost or Grow, or the jump to Prosper+. Ask for both numbers in the quote, because the gap between them is the real price of intake.
Those per user prices are fair for a firm that uses the whole practice system every day. The comparison only matters if intake was the reason for the spend. Consultations Practice, for up to five professionals, is $129 a month or $768 a year, and it holds the conversation and books the consultation instead of recording a lead for someone to call back.
- PracticePanther Business, 3 users: $267 a month billed yearly
- MyCase Pro, 3 users: $300 a month billed yearly
- CosmoLex Pro, 3 users: $387 a month yearly, with online scheduling
- Rocket Matter Pro plus CRM, 3 users: $402 a month plus $399 onboarding
- Consultations Practice, up to five professionals: $129 a month or $768 a year
Where Smokeball is still the better buy
If your work is form heavy and lives in one practice area, Smokeball is a serious option. Its practice area templates and calculators, automated court forms and Word integration are deeper than most competitors, and automatic time capture on Prosper+ recovers billable time that manual entry misses. Every plan includes onboarding, and Smokeball says there is no limit on the number of users or clients who can access the software.
It also suits a firm whose staff already answer every lead quickly. A family law practice whose paralegal returns each inquiry within minutes may not need anything at the front door, and Prosper+ keeps lead records, intake and matters in one system.
So this page does not argue that you should leave Smokeball. It argues that you should know intake is an add-on or a top plan upgrade with no printed price, and whether the job losing you new clients is a smaller one you can fix without a migration.
- Family law, estate planning, real estate and other form heavy practices
- Firms that rely on court forms and practice area calculators
- Firms that want automatic time capture (Prosper+)
- Firms that want Word and Outlook at the center of the workflow
- Staff who already return every new inquiry within minutes
Smokeball competitors, by the job you are replacing
If you want a different practice system with intake in the plan and a printed price, the like for like names are PracticePanther Business at $89 per user billed yearly, read on 2 October 2026, and MyCase Pro at $100, read on 5 October. CosmoLex, read on 7 October, charges $49, $99 and $129 per user yearly and puts online scheduling on Pro. Rocket Matter, read on 6 October, charges $59 to $145 per user and sells intake in a CRM add-on.
Clio publishes an entry price from $49 per user a month and sells Clio Grow for intake on its higher plans. If you mainly want a separate intake layer rather than a new practice system, the names are Lawmatics, Lead Docket and Law Ruler, all quote only, and all of them still depend on staff to hold the first conversation.
If the bottleneck is response time, or inquiries arrive after the office has closed, the alternative is a different kind of product rather than a different practice management suite.
- Printed price with intake in the plan: PracticePanther Business $89, MyCase Pro $100
- Online scheduling in the plan: CosmoLex Pro, $129 per user yearly
- Billing depth from ProfitSolv: Rocket Matter, $95 per user plus a CRM add-on
- Clio, from $49 per user, with Grow for intake on higher plans
- The website conversation itself, at any hour: an AI intake agent from $49 a month
Running Consultations with Smokeball, or instead of it
The most common setup keeps Smokeball for matters, documents and billing and puts Consultations at the front door of the website. The prospective client talks to the intake conversation, answers the screening questions your firm defines, names the other parties, uploads the documents the matter needs and books a consultation if they fit. The completed intake exports, so your team opens the matter in Smokeball as usual. That lets a Boost or Grow firm screen and book web leads without buying the Intake add-on or moving to Prosper+ for it.
Choosing Consultations instead of Smokeball makes sense for a firm that went shopping mainly to stop losing inquiries and already keeps matters in another tool. Solo is $49 a month for one attorney. Practice, at $129 for up to five professionals, adds document collection during intake and qualification rules per practice area. Firm, at $299 for up to twenty, adds voice intake alongside chat and advanced integrations. All three are flat per firm, with no onboarding fee.
Every plan is paid by card, monthly with no annual term or once a year at half the monthly price: $288, $768 or $1,788. You can run the intake conversation at the top of this page right now and see what a prospective client sees.
- Alongside Smokeball: web intake runs first, the record exports to your matter
- Keeps a Boost or Grow firm off the Intake add-on and Prosper+ for web leads
- Captures every party name at intake, so the conflict check has clean input
- Instead of Smokeball, if the conversation was the job: from $49 a month
- A printed price, no quote call and no onboarding fee

Smokeball and its competitors, what each vendor publishes
Smokeball and our own plans were read from the vendor sites on 8 October 2026, CosmoLex on 7 October, Rocket Matter on 6 October, MyCase on 5 October and PracticePanther on 2 October 2026. Clio blocks automated reads, so its figure is the entry price it published in August 2026. Where a vendor shows no number, the table says so rather than estimating one.
| Product | Published price | How it bills | Automated intake? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smokeball Bill or Boost | None, Get pricing button | Per user, per its FAQ | Not on Bill; Intake is a paid add-on on Boost |
| Smokeball Grow | None, Get pricing button | Per user, per its FAQ | Intake is a paid add-on; staff hold the conversation |
| Smokeball Prosper+ | None, Get pricing button | Per user, per its FAQ | Intake, lead management and inquiry intake included; staff hold the conversation |
| PracticePanther Business | $89 per user a month, billed yearly | Per user; intake forms start here | Forms, texting and eSignature; staff hold the conversation |
| MyCase Pro | $100 per user a month, billed yearly | Per user; intake forms and CRM included | Forms and lead CRM; staff hold the conversation |
| CosmoLex Pro | $129 per user a month yearly, $139 monthly | Per user | Intake workflow automation and online scheduling |
| Rocket Matter Pro plus Core CRM | $95 plus $39 per user a month, paid annually | Per user, $399 CRM onboarding | One web intake form; staff hold the conversation |
| Consultations Solo | $49 a month, or $288 a year | 1 professional, flat | Yes, the AI conversation screens and books on your website |
| Consultations Practice | $129 a month, or $768 a year | Up to 5 professionals, flat | Yes, plus document collection and rules per practice area |
Some directories still quote Smokeball at a flat $149 a month. That figure was displayed on the vendor page on 13 August 2026 and removed within a week, and Smokeball now says price depends on user count and contract term. Vendors change prices without notice, so confirm with the vendor before you sign.

What buyers ask about Smokeball alternatives
What is the best alternative to Smokeball?
It depends on the job. For practice management with intake in the plan and a printed price, PracticePanther Business at $89 per user billed yearly or MyCase Pro at $100. For built in accounting, CosmoLex. If web inquiries wait too long for someone to screen them, Consultations runs the intake conversation itself, from $49 a month flat per firm.
How much does Smokeball cost per month?
Smokeball does not publish a price. Read on 8 October 2026, its four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, each show a Get pricing button, and its FAQ says cost depends on the number of users, the plan, the contract term and optional products. A From $149 a month figure appeared briefly in August 2026 and was removed.
Who are Smokeball competitors?
Smokeball competes with practice management tools such as Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, CosmoLex, Rocket Matter, LEAP and Filevine. For intake specifically it competes with Lawmatics, Lead Docket and Law Ruler. Of these, MyCase, PracticePanther, CosmoLex and Rocket Matter print their plan prices; Smokeball, LEAP and the intake CRMs quote on request.
Does Smokeball have client intake?
Yes, but not on every plan. Its comparison matrix shows intake as unavailable on Bill, available on Boost and Grow with the paid Intake add-on, and included on Prosper+, which also adds lead management, inquiry intake and advanced matter intake. Smokeball publishes no price for the add-on or the plans.
Is Smokeball better than Clio?
Smokeball is stronger on practice area templates, court forms and automatic time capture, which suits form heavy practices. Clio has the larger integration marketplace, publishes an entry price from $49 per user and sells a dedicated intake product, Clio Grow. Neither publishes the full price of intake on its pricing page.
Is Smokeball cloud based?
Partly, depending on the plan. Smokeball lists Boost as fully browser based, while Grow and Prosper+ include its native desktop application alongside a web app, with Word and Outlook integration. Smokeball describes Grow as designed for firms with three or more staff who collaborate on matters.
