Actionstep Pricing and Actionstep Alternatives for Midsize Law Firms

Actionstep is a configurable practice management and legal accounting platform aimed at midsize firms, headquartered in Denver for its US business and also sold in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Firms look for an alternative for practical reasons: no published number to budget against, an implementation project run by a partner before anyone uses it, separately priced modules for intake forms and document automation, and the fact that none of it replies to a prospective client at 9pm. This page sets out what Actionstep publishes, read on 24 October 2026, where it is the right buy, what its competitors print and when a smaller purchase in front of your practice system fixes the problem.

In short

Actionstep does not publish a price. Read on 24 October 2026, its US pricing page describes Practice Management, Legal Accounting and four add-on modules as "priced per user plus implementation fees", with Request Pricing in place of a figure and setup handled by certified implementation partners. The practice management platforms that do print prices are MyCase at $50 to $130 per user a month billed yearly and PracticePanther at $49 to $114. If the problem you are solving is new inquiries waiting for a reply, Consultations answers, screens and books them from $49 a month, flat per firm.

Actionstep is practice management for midsize firms, with matter and case management, client intake and form management, document assembly and storage, a CRM, a client portal, workflow automation, advanced calendaring and reporting, plus a full legal accounting suite in North America. Intake webforms are sold as the Capture module, document automation as Builder, AI time capture as Trace and analytics as Acumen, each priced per user plus implementation. Consultations does one job at the front door. It talks to the prospective client the moment they reach your website, asks your qualifying questions, follows up on vague answers, collects the first documents and books the consultation, then hands your team a short brief. It does not run matters, billing or trust accounting, and it is priced flat per firm on a public pricing page.

Why pros pick Consultations

One AI conversation that qualifies, intakes, books, and briefs

An AI conversation, not a form

Instead of a static form or a calendar link, our AI talks with each lead in plain language, qualifies them against your criteria, and asks for exactly what you need to know.

The whole front door in one place

Qualify, intake, collect documents, book the paid appointment, and produce a prepped brief, all in a single conversation, so you stop stitching tools together.

You walk in prepared

Every booked meeting comes with a clean brief of who is coming and why, so you only take the right consultations and you are ready before the call starts.

What Actionstep pricing looks like when you ask

With the region set to US, the Actionstep pricing page lists three things you can buy and gives none of them a number. Practice Management is described as an adaptable platform for midsize law firms and is "priced per user plus implementation fees". Time capture, billing and core accounting are shown as included with it. Legal Accounting, a full general ledger, banking, accounts payable and receivable, trust accounting and financial reporting suite, is available separately or added to practice management and is only offered in North America. It carries the same per user plus implementation wording.

Four add-on modules sit underneath. Builder automates documents from matter data with conditional fields and a Word integration. Capture is the intake module, with styled webforms you can embed on your website without code, several documents and contacts collected in one form, your own branding and a dashboard of every form. Trace is AI time capture across Outlook, Word and desktop tools. Acumen is embedded analytics. Every one of them says priced per user plus implementation fees and has a Request Pricing button.

Before any of that runs, the page says you will be connected with a certified implementation partner, and it offers finance options so the upfront cost does not delay the project. A budget for Actionstep therefore has at least three lines: the per user subscription, the module subscriptions you choose and the partner implementation. Ask for all three as annual figures on one quote.

  • Per user subscription for practice management, and for legal accounting if bought separately
  • Per user pricing for each add-on, including Capture for intake forms
  • A partner implementation fee, with optional financing

Why the Actionstep figures on directories do not match

Because the vendor prints nothing, listing sites fill the gap. One review site shows an entry plan at $99 per user a month, one comparison page cites roughly $115 per user a month plus setup, and a pricing estimator suggests $500 to $1,000 per user for implementation. Another site shows $49 to $99 per user, but that range is for an older Actionstep conflict check product and was last updated years ago. None of these figures appears on actionstep.com, and none says who quoted it or when.

We do not restate any of them as Actionstep's price. Use them only as a reason to ask a precise question on the sales call: what is our annual subscription for this many users, which modules does that include, and what does implementation cost with the partner you recommend. A written answer to that question is the only Actionstep price that means anything for your firm.

  • Treat directory figures as questions, not prices
  • Ask for subscription, modules and implementation as separate annual lines
  • Confirm the term and what happens to your data if you leave

Where Actionstep is the right buy

Actionstep earns its place when a firm wants one configurable system for matters, documents, intake, CRM and accounting, and has the operations staff to design workflows around its practice areas. Its practice area pages cover personal injury, family, estate planning, immigration, employment, real estate, bankruptcy, criminal defense and more, and its accounting suite is a genuine reason to choose it for a North American firm that wants trust and operating accounting inside the same platform.

The partner led implementation is a strength for the right firm. A midsize office moving off an older server based system usually needs someone to map matter types, migrate data and train staff, and Actionstep builds that into the purchase rather than leaving it to you. If that is your project, compare Actionstep with the other platforms on a full first year cost that includes implementation, not on subscription alone.

  • Midsize firms that want matters, documents, intake and accounting in one system
  • Firms with operations staff to own workflow configuration
  • Offices replacing an older practice system and needing a guided migration

How the main Actionstep alternatives compare on price

MyCase prints every tier. Read on 24 October 2026, Basic is $50 per user a month billed yearly or $60 monthly, Pro is $100 or $120 and Advanced is $130 or $150. Client Intake Forms and Legal CRM start on Pro, Conflict Check Tracking and the Open API are on Advanced, and MyCase Accounting adds $39 per user a month on Pro and Advanced. A ten person firm on Pro pays $12,000 a year before accounting.

PracticePanther prints every tier too. Read the same day, Solo is $49 per user a month billed yearly or $59 monthly, Essential $69 or $79, Business $89 or $99 and Business Pro $114 or $124. Intake Forms, native eSignature and 2-way texting start on Business, and PantherAccounting Plus is on Business Pro. A ten person firm on Business pays $10,680 a year.

Clio publishes only that plans start at $49 per user a month, last confirmed in August 2026 because its site blocks automated reading; its Grow intake CRM is bundled with the top plans and sold as an add-on on others. Smokeball publishes no price. So among the platforms a midsize firm usually shortlists against Actionstep, only MyCase and PracticePanther let you budget before a call.

  • MyCase Pro, the first tier with intake forms and CRM, is $100 per user a month yearly
  • PracticePanther Business, the first tier with intake forms, is $89 per user a month yearly
  • Clio prints a $49 starting figure only; Smokeball and Actionstep print none

When the problem is the inquiry, not the practice system

Many firms start looking at a new practice system because new business is slipping, and a new practice system rarely fixes that. A webform module collects details and then waits for a person. If the inquiry arrives at night, on a weekend or while the intake coordinator is on another call, the prospective client keeps searching and calls the next firm that answers.

Consultations sits in front of whatever practice system you run, Actionstep included. An AI conversation on your website asks the questions your attorneys set, follows up when an answer is vague, checks the case type and timing against your rules, collects the first documents and books a consultation into the calendar you already use. Your team gets a short brief to work from. It handles intake, qualification and booking only and never gives legal advice; the attorney advises.

Because it is priced flat per firm, adding intake staff or attorneys does not raise the bill. Practice is $129 a month for up to 5 professionals, Firm is $299 a month for up to 20 and Enterprise is $498 a month for up to 50, with yearly billing at $768, $1,788 and $2,988. Try the interactive demo above, then Get started on the plan that fits.

  • Answers and screens every inquiry the moment it arrives
  • Books qualified prospects and hands over a prepped brief

MyCase $50, $100, $130 per user billed yearly; $60, $120, $150 monthly Pro at $100 per user billed yearly Per user Self serve trial, no card required

Consultations $49 Solo, $129 Practice, $299 Firm, $498 Enterprise Every plan; AI intake and booking included Flat per firm Self serve

Good questions

Actionstep vs Consultations, answered

Ask for the annual subscription for your exact user count, the price of each module you need, including Capture for intake and Builder for documents, the implementation fee from the partner they recommend, the contract term and the data export terms if you leave.
